Using ID Number for People Banned from Travel

Wednesday 28 March 2012

H.E. Dr. Hadef bin Jua’an Al Dhaheri, Minister of Justice, stated that the ID card or passport number will be used when sending orders of banning people from travel to the electronic tracking systems at the police departments and border ports throughout the State.

In a letter sent to the Federal National Council (FNC), which was published by Emarat Al Youm newspaper, and in response to a question posed by H.E. Mesbah Saeed Belajaid Al Ketbi, Member of the FNC, with regard to banning some persons from travel based on their names, H.E. the Minister of Justice stated that this procedure has been adopted within framework of recommendations of a joint working committee between the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interior to address the problem of name similarity for persons banned from travel and to solve this problem effectively once and for all.

Al Ketbi had previously called for using the ID card number rather than names to identify the nationals and expatriates who are on trials or received sentences and banned from travel, in order to avoid arresting the wrong persons due to the name similarity. Such confusion may cause security and social problems for such persons who are arrested by mistake and may delay their business due to banning them from travelling.
