Technological workshop draws roadmap for digital ID applications in the UAE

H.E. Dr. Eng. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Emirates ID Director General, has stressed the importance of the strategic objectives that the Emirates Identity Authority is seeking to achieve through the successful application of the digital ID applications project, which is one of the most prominent and vital strategic projects at the UAE level.

This was announced during the two-day technological workshop on digital ID applications, which was hosted by the Emirates Identity Authority and held under his chairmanship with the participation of a number of experts, senior researchers and specialists from the European countries that implement similar initiatives in this field such as Belgium and France.

Supporting the eGovernments across the UAE tops the list of objectives set by the Emirates Identity Authority for its strategic project of digital ID applications as embodied in contributing to protecting and securing electronic dealings and preventing the impersonation of individuals during their online transactions, he said, stressing the importance of the issues that the workshop is dealing with and their role in drawing the UAE roadmap on digital ID applications.

This vital project would efficiently contribute to consolidating the concept of “secure online economy” at the UAE level through the provision of ID verification services and substantiation of credibility of ID card used for completing customers’ online procedures, he said.

Al Khouri reviewed the huge economic revenues expected to be generated from the digital ID applications project, which include contributing notably to protecting the UAE economy through saving the money annually lost as a result of impersonations in online transactions.

He noted the role of the project’s successful applications in building confidence and increasing the trust of individuals in online transactions concluded with UAE government departments. This would lead to an increase in the use of online services in the UAE and would consequently contribute to making savings, he said, adding that this would also reflect on the different economic aspects in the UAE and would consolidate the concept of “secure online economy.”

Meanwhile, the participants in the workshop were familiarized with the experiences of some countries worldwide and leading European countries known for their activated digital ID applications. They made a comparison between these experiences and what had been achieved in the UAE, which is regarded as one of the countries that sponsor and adopt a tight and leading program for the issuance of smart ID cards and the issuance and management of digital ID cards for citizens and residents in the UAE for the purpose of streamlining and utilizing this online treasure in the UAE in the best way possible.

The workshop saw the efficient participation of a large number of experts, senior researchers at European universities and specialists in electronic encryption and the security and protection of the infrastructures related to the digital ID applications. They discussed the opportunities available in the UAE for coming out with a tight strategy for activating the use of digital ID applications over the upcoming years.

It is noteworthy that the Emirates Identity Authority will start holding further workshops with the participation of its strategic partners and the representatives of a number of major UAE sectors including health, education and banking sectors.
