The 7th meeting of the GCC Smart Card Steering Committee will be held at the Emirates Palace Hotel in the capital Abu Dhabi today (Sunday).
The two-day meeting sees the participation of 20 representatives from the member countries of the committee; namely, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait, in addition to the representatives of the GCC Secretariat General.
The committee will discuss the agenda topics including exploring the procedures taken by the member countries as regards a number of issues such as reading smart cards electronically in exits, transport area protection mechanism and applying the use of smart cards in electronic gates.
It will also discuss the procedures taken by the concerned countries as regards a number of previous decisions including the legislation related to the issuance of personal ID cards to the GCC citizens of all age categories, the adoption of the smart card as a proof of identity for GCC citizens and the use of smart card applications in such fields as driving licenses and health files.
