Emirates Identity Authority launches “ID Plus” initiative to activate its card in consumer sector

The Emirates Identity Authority has called on the private sector establishments operating in the UAE to benefit from the digital ID card applications for developing their services provided to customers.

The Emirates Identity Authority expressed its full readiness to co-operate with the private sector establishments including banks and money exchanges etc. interested in developing software that would enable them to benefit from digital ID card project in their transactions with the public.

The Emirates Identity Authority emphasized that its digital ID card enjoys very advanced features and infrastructure that can help develop the services and procedures of different types of public and private organizations through the online payment portals, electronic readers and the Emirates Identity Authority’s public key infrastructure, which helps verify the customer’s identity and the safety, powers and data stored in his/her ID card, not to mention the electronic signature and many other advanced applications.

This was announced during the launch by the Emirates Identity Authority of its first initiative for activating its digital ID card in the consumer sector across the UAE under the slogan (ID PLUS) as part of a memorandum of understanding that the Emirates Identity Authority signed recently with Al Fajer Net Group.

This initiative comes as part of the Emirates Identity Authority’s endeavor to encourage private sector establishments to benefit from the digital ID car d applications with the aim of facilitating, ensuring and protecting online transactions across the UAE and developing them in such a manner that meets the needs of both the public and private sectors.

The ID PLUS initiative is aimed at providing innovated and highly secure solutions for the different entities interested in benefiting from the ID card applications under the online payment system through the advanced infrastructure that the digital ID provides to individuals and the elements that the digital ID contains for identifying the personal identity of individuals through the secret code, biometric data (fingerprints and face-prints) or digital certificates.

H.E. Dr. Eng. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Emirates ID Director General, said signing memoranda of understanding between the Emirates Identity Authority and private sector organizations comes as part of the Emirates Identity Authority’s keenness on establishing a partnership with the private sector and contributing efficiently and vitally to the comprehensive process of development and the UAE economic and cultural growth for achieving success and excellence in serving customers.

Al Khouri affirmed that signing this kind of memoranda of understanding comes as part of the Emirates Identity Authority’s endeavor to implement the government’s strategy 2021 aimed at switching to the digital services and digital economy system, which rests on the benefits and services related to communication technologies, considering that the Emirates Identity Authority is one of the UAE most prominent organizations concerned with developing the digital infrastructure and ensuring its sustainability.

The Emirates Identity Authority signed many similar memoranda of understanding with private sector organizations as part of one of the most prominent strategic projects being carried out by the Emirates Identity Authority  for developing the UAE service system in the public and private sectors, Al Khouri added, noting that this adds to the other strategic projects aimed at boosting the ingredients of the national and individual security in line with the demands of the age and also supporting decision-makers.

Al Khouri noted that the launch of services of the Electronic Certification Center, which is being established by the Emirates Identity Authority, would immensely support the future digital ID applications, particularly the ID PLUS initiative by providing instant data and electronic signature services. He emphasized that the ID card would witness a quantum leap in 2012 by becoming the most valuable card in the UAE with the Emirates Identity Authority entering the stage of developing the services provided to customers and registering all the UAE population.

Al Khouri considered that the ID PLUS initiative would bring to a minimum identity thefts and cyber crimes due to the fact that the ID card is a legal and secure means of substantiation of the confidential information and data.

The memorandum of understanding was signed at the Emirates Identity Authority headquarters in Abu Dhabi in the presence of Al Khouri and H.E. Mohammad Mubarak Essa Al Abbar, Group Vice President, Al Fajer Net Group.

Meanwhile, H.E. Nasser Al Mazrouei, ICT Executive Director, Emirates Identity Authority, clarified that the memorandum of understanding signed by the Emirates Identity Authority with Al Fajer Net Group would allow the group to develop a financial system for the different private sector organizations to benefit from automatic telling machines and online points of sale to provide their services easily and smoothly by depending on the ID card for identifying customers securely before the service is provided.

It is worthwhile the identity theft has become an international phenomenon and is regarded as a worldwide organized crime that follows professional methods and technological techniques. The identity theft losses in the United States were estimated at $39 billion in 2010. Last January, the Criminal Investigation Department at Abu Dhabi Police announced that 235 electronic crimes were committed in the UAE in 2010 including checking-account theft, credit card theft, Internet swindling, electronic piracy and selling phone calls.
