UAE hosts 7th meeting of GCC Smart Card Steering Committee

The UAE will host the 7th meeting of the GCC Smart Card Steering Committee, which will be held at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi from Sunday, May 8, 2011.

In a press release, H.E. Dr. Eng. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Emirates ID Director General, welcomed the representatives of the delegations participating in this meeting from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait in addition to the representatives of the GCC Secretariat General.

He explained that the hosting by the UAE of this meeting comes as part of the Higher Leadership’s ongoing keenness and directives that it is necessary to exert every effort possible to make a success of the work of the GCC joint committees in a manner that would reflect positively on the interests of the GCC countries and peoples.

The Emirates Identity Authority completed all the administrative and technical arrangements necessary to make a dazzling success of this significant meeting whose 7th session is held in the capital Abu Dhabi with the participation of around 20 officials from the GCC countries, he said.

Al Khouri stressed the importance of the agenda topics of the committee’s meetings which included exploring the procedures taken by the member countries as regards a number of issues such as reading smart cards electronically in exits, transport area protection mechanism and applying the use of smart cards in electronic gates.

He clarified that the 7th meeting of the steering committee would be briefed on the procedures taken by the concerned countries as regards a number of decisions previously taken by the committee including the legislation related to the issuance of personal ID cards to the GCC citizens of all age categories and the adoption of the smart card as a proof of identity for GCC citizens.

Meanwhile, Al Khouri stated that the participants in this meeting would listen to the committee’s directives as regards the use of smart card applications in the driving license and health file fields.
