The Emirates Identity Authority has approved the specifications of the self service machines intended to be provided by the Emirates Identity Authority to serve its customers and circulated gradually across the UAE from the end of 2011.

The Emirates Identity Authority said it would start by the end of this year providing a package of ID card related services via the self service stations which it intends to provide in phases all over the UAE, provided that two stations would be tested as a first stage.

The project of decentralized self service machines would initially offer the possibility to renew expired ID cards and print the renewed cards within minutes, the Emirates Identity Authority said, adding that these stations would also make it possible for customers to change the personal identification number (PIN) of their cards, among other innovated services.

The Emirates Identity Authority affirmed that the launch of this project coincides with the gradual orientation towards rendering the ID card the most valuable and important card across the UAE as a means for identifying and authenticating the identity of individuals and as a condition for benefiting from the services of the government and private sectors in the UAE in the light of the registration of all the UAE population, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

The Emirates Identity Authority noted that the launch of the project of the self service stations comes as part of the solutions that it is keen to provide to its customers to enable them to get up-to-date, easy and convenient services and also as part of its efforts to provide innovated services in implementation of the its mission that places customers on top of its priorities.

The Emirates Identity Authority pointed out that the provision of these machines would speed up the delivery of cards to their owners and is part of a set of radical solutions that the Emirates Identity Authority worked out to put an end to the delayed delivery of cards, noting that these solutions started recently to give fruit.

The approved self service machines are in line with the world’s highest standards and specifications and have been designed as per advanced technologies and merits to ensure the authentication of the user’s identity through his/her fingerprint or PIN.

The PIN associated with the card is a means to protect the personal transactions completed through the ID card and to authenticate the identity of the ID card holder (the fingerprint and personal photo can also be used to authenticate the identity of the ID card holder). The PIN consists of 4 digits that can be personally changed on a continuous basis. If the PIN has been inserted wrongly for three successive times, it will be inactivated but can be reactivated by visiting the nearest registration center or a self service station to be provided in future by the Emirates Identity Authority.
