Emirates Identity Authority participates in the “SDW 2011” Conference in London

Emirates Identity Authority participated in the activities of the World Conference “Security Documents World SDW 2011”, concluded at Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London, attended by about 300 officials, specialists, and practitioners representing 50 countries from around the world.

H.E. Dr. Eng. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Emirates Identity Director General introduced a paper to the Conference titled (Building the Digital Economy). He emphasized the keenness of senior leadership in the United Arab Emirates to create a secure and safe environment for all citizens and residents living in the country.

The Emirates ID Director General also stated the importance of the historical statement by the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (God bless his soul) when he said, “We are a part of the surrounding world, never can we think one day that we could be a world alone”, and the role of this statement in confirming our connecting with the world, and we are keen on being an active and influential part in the process of development for the good and the interests of mankind.

The paper emphasized that the digital economy is eventual and it will double the size of the governments’ responsibilities and pushes them into developing their strategic plans, initiatives and projects.

The paper pointed out that the digital economy constitutes the source of national income for many countries, which are keen to intensify their presence and increase their contribution in this field to follow in the footsteps of developed countries with successful practices in the domain of digital economy.

In his paper, H.E. Dr. Eng. Al Khouri said that the absence of an authoritative digital identity is one of the most prominent challenges facing e-governance projects in the public sector as well as in the field of e-commerce.

He explained that the lucidity of UAE has been reflected in its commitment to continue the process of e-transformation and providing all forms of support for the digital identity project, which was launched by the Emirates Identity Authority last year, and currently works to implement it with many concerned parties in the State in line with the Commission towards an Infrastructure for the identities on the electronic networks and other digital channels.

The paper also reviewed the implementation of the digital identity project plan, its levels and expected role in the advancement of the digital economy in the state, and the advanced characteristics provided by the new smart identity card issued by the Emirates Identity Authority, and its contribution to add a new dimension to strategies for improving services in the public and private sector.

The paper pointed to the developed methods of technology for the digital identity project, which would provide a high level of safety to services provided on digital networks, and the possibility of proof and confirmation of the identities of individuals by characteristics of security such as PIN code, fingerprints, digital certificates, digital signature, and other characteristics.

The paper called for the need to provide the infrastructure before the start-up phase to develop plans aimed at developing the economic environment, where studies indicated that specialized government institutions are working to develop its services prior to the establishment of infrastructure, a move that would make these institutions stop at the first juncture without continuing the process of achieving the set goals.

The paper discussed the infrastructure development project for digital identity and the establishment of electronic authentication, which is being created in coordination and cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center, which is expected to start the first phase of operation during the second half of this year, 2011, a Center which will provide the possibility to validate the data of card Identity card and digital signature through the direct contact with the regulations in the center of authentication.

The paper also handled some of the challenges that face the practitioners in the public sector, especially those relating to the maturity of the current technologies in the enforcement of the digital identity project and the private sector contribution in services development through shouldering its responsibilities and making strategic partnerships with the public sector institutions.

On commenting on the paper the participated delegation in the world conference 2011 “The Security Documents World” commended the federal government 2010 – 2021 vision and its role in constructing the modern state enjoys the utmost levels of security and safety.

On the other hand the audience praised the project to develop the software of reading ID cards and the standards that built upon it, and the role of the Emirates Identity Authority in the development of effective plans for providing all the vital sectors in the State through the accredited centers will provide electronic readers and software operating them.

The World Conference “Security Documents World 2011 ” focused at its fifth session, on a number of trends including: the machine-readable passport to the global initiative, and electronic-visa, electronic-smart technologies to monitor the border, and how to get the best out of biometrics, as well as to a future document of design technologies, and the development of The next generation of secure documents.

It is worth noting that the delegation of the Emirates Identity Authority participating in this conference consists of H.E. Dr. Eng. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Director General, H.E. Hatem Al Hamli, Executive Director of Financial Affairs, Executive Director for Administration and Acting relations.
