The Emirates Identity Authority has published a new research titled “Solutions and frameworks for developing a system for managing electronic identity among the GCC countries” in the “Global Journal of Strategies & Governance”.
The research clarified that many governments worldwide are applying advanced systems to manage the identity of their peoples and that there is a global tendency for these systems to replace the existing traditional ones so as to be an ideal mainstay for the major strategic initiatives related to developing businesses and samples of innovated service.
The research pointed out that the electronic identity, which is regarded as one of the most important outputs of these systems, is one of the helping factors for developing the services provided on digital networks like the Internet in both the public and private sectors. It is also an ideal instrument for building and enabling smart communities so that a citizen would be closer to the government through its round-the-clock interactive electronic services.
The scientific study emphasized that through the smart identity issued by governments, the electronic identity has a more credible vocabulary, reflects the existence and identity of the bearer in the space of the Internet and is in the process of becoming the binding document to identify the identity on such networks as the Internet.
The research reviewed the GCC countries’ initiative to stimulate the applications of the smart identity cards issued by these countries and their keenness on developing the concept of the unified electronic identity with the aim of enabling the GCC citizens to travel across GCC countries using the advanced features of the new cards for confirming and verifying the identity.
The paper provided an innovated framework and a number of technological solutions for operating and linking the infrastructures in the GCC countries, developing a unified system for managing electronic identity among the GCC countries and activating direct contact with the electronic certification centers.
The study concluded that the success of this initiative would contribute to pushing the wheel of economic growth among the GCC countries forward and would help develop the concepts of knowledge-based and economic development in these countries.
Previously, the Emirates Identity Authority submitted this study to the General Secretariat of the GCC for discussion at the meeting of the sub-committee for ID card applications in the GCC countries. The Emirates Identity Authority is currently coo-ordinating with two member countries to implement the recommendations of this study and develop the test system expected to be commissioned in the second half of next year.
