The Harmonized System (HS Code)
The Harmonized System (HS Code or Harmonized System) is a global system for classifying and categorizing traded goods, developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO). It is used to determine customs duties and facilitate international trade. Products are systematically classified using numeric codes of up to six digits, known as the “Harmonized System Code.” Originally, it is used for customs purposes at the international level to determine tariffs and collect trade statistics. The system helps facilitate international trade and standardize the classification of goods exchanged between countries. It also forms the basis for more detailed national classifications in some countries. The Harmonized System code itself cannot be changed, but extensions may be added at the national level or within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
